Prior to the start of this academic year, Victory Sports Medicine generously donated three pieces of workout equipment to the Weedsport Central School District. The student-athletes at Weedsport are excited to have the new equipment and the coaches anticipate that the introduction of the equipment will raise interest level and ultimately improve fitness.

The Lateral Pull Down/Row combination machine was used by The Weedsport CSD Varsity football team as well as the girls’ Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Modified basketball teams for weight training purposes throughout the summer of 2013. The Leg Extension/Hamstring Curl combination will soon be positioned in the weight room.

“The equipment donated by Victory Sports Medicine & Orthopedics provides an instant upgrade to our weight training facility,” said Weedsport Athletic Director Jamie Carr. “The newly-acquired machines offer our student-athletes a wide range of fitness exercises that will help them prepare for competition and reduce the risk of injury.”

It is anticipated that these first two machines will be heavily used by student-athletes who are members of Weedsport’s interscholastic teams and also be used by students in their physical education classes.

The third piece of equipment, The Total Gym Power Tower (body weight/suspension type of resistance), will be targeted for use primarily as an injury rehabilitation machine. The District’s Athletic Trainer will be instrumental in guiding the school in using it with student-athletes that are progressing through a rehabilitation program.

“In these times of financial restraint for the school district, we are indebted to Victory Sports Medicine & Orthopedics for their benevolence,” said Weedsport Superintendent Shaun O’Connor. “This enhancement to our equipment may not have been possible without Victory Sports Medicine & Orthopedics’ donation.”

Skaneateles, NY (June 19, 2013) – The Corporate Challenge isn’t the only community event where you will see members of the Victory Sports Medicine team. Employees frequently engage in activities that they also encourage their patients to take part in, such as the Skinnyman Triathlon in Skaneateles and the Mountain Goat Run.

Dr. Marc Pietropaoli, owner of Victory Sports Medicine, says that “as the leading Sports Medicine & Orthopedics practice in Central New York, it is important for us to set the example for patients when it comes to health, wellness and injury prevention.”

The Corporate Challenge is a great way for Victory Sports employees to work together towards team-building, camaraderie, and feeling a sense of accomplishment. This year they had double the amount of entrants with 15 participants and look forward to growing that number each year. All costs to participate in the challenge are covered by the organization, helping to encourage even more involvement.

“I have run the Corporate Challenge in the past and had a great time, but never had as good a time as I did last year and again this year, as the head of my own corporation. It was great to see many of our employees participate and “blaze the trail” for years to come,” said Dr. Pietropaoli.

And the Victory employees feel the same way. Jody Miller, a PTA at Victory Sports medicine, said “Last year’s Corporate Challenge was my first competitive run and I didn’t know what to expect. I was just very proud of myself that I had what it took to finish.”

Victory Sports Medicine also offers a global Wellness Program for all employees called Victory Well Ahead that focuses on health risk assessments, preventing worksite injuries, stress management strategies and getting fit. Staff participation continues to increase each year.

Skaneateles, NY (May 9, 2013) – The Skaneateles Girls Softball team has had a strong start to their season. The new season started off with positive attitudes, a team ready to work, and even a new look.

On March 2, Dr. Marc Pietropaoli joined a handful of other physicians from around the U.S. to give complete physicals to all 75 players of the team as part of their pre-season preparations for game-time. Dr. Pietropaoli worked with a team of orthopedic specialists to provide head-to-toe examinations for the professional athletes. Although this was his first season assisting the Washington Nationals, Dr. Pietropaoli spent many years with the Toronto Blue Jays performing the same spring training tasks.

“It was a great experience to help out and interact with such great athletes. I saw many familiar faces of players from the Auburn Doubledays that have moved up, and it’s exciting to work in that environment” said Dr. Pietropaoli.

Dr. Pietropaoli’s sports medicine and orthopedic practice helps patients and athletes return to their active lifestyles or sports by specializing in minimally invasive surgical procedures which result in smaller incisions, faster recovery and better patient outcomes. He believes that many of today’s health issues and injuries can be prevented through healthier lifestyles and education, and that prevention is the only true way to lower the cost of healthcare.

Dr. Pietropaoli is a graduate of Syracuse University and Upstate Medical University, where he was Valedictorian of his medical school class. With snow and ice now on the ground, a steady gait and good balance is more critical than ever. This is the time of year when the emergency room fills up with those who have fallen and sometimes have even broken a bone or two.

Marc P. Pietropaoli, MD, founder of Victory Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, located at 791 West Genesee Street in Skaneateles, states that falling due to a lack of balance, stability and dizziness happens more frequently than we might think. One out of three people ages 65 and older fall each year, and about 2.2 million will need medical attention. One in ten falls cause serious injury, 340,000 falls result in broken hips – and worst of all, one-third of those patients die within a year.

Victory Sports Medicine strongly believes that preventative healthcare and diagnostic tests can reduce the number of injuries when it comes to a person’s gait and balance. The importance of being able to diagnose patients’ “balance risk” hits home for Dr. Pietropaoli, since his grandmother passed away as a result of an injury from falling.

“When I heard of this revolutionary new approach to help diagnose and assist patients who might have gait and balance difficulty, I jumped at the chance to make it available in my practice,” said Dr. Pietropaoli. A few simple, yet specialized tests allow Dr. Pietropaoli and his team to determine an individual’s degree of risk for falling or lack of balance.

The first step involves a posturography test. When the patient steps on a computerized weight scale, the system’s software calculates weight, body mass index, balance, stability, and fall risk. A detailed printout includes the determination of a fall risk score.

If it is determined that there is a risk, the next diagnostic exam called Videonystagmography (VNG) is scheduled to determine the cause of the patient’s dizziness, if any, and allows an appropriate treatment plan to be initiated if needed to help prevent falls.

In the third step of the procedure, the patient will put on specially designed infrared goggles connected to a computer that measures equilibrium and balance transmissions to the brain by the eye and head movements – also directly tied to the risk of falling.

“These tests help us determine if difficulty in gait and balance is related to a musculoskeletal, inner-ear, or neurological problem. Depending on the findings, we can treat them right here or refer them to the proper specialist,” says Dr. Pietropaoli.

“Most people don’t know it, but falls are the number one cause of nonfatal injuries in all age groups,” notes Dr. Pietropaoli. He believes that many of today’s health issues and injuries are truly preventable and hopes to ease the fear of falling for patients.

An estimated 9 million Americans suffer from tennis elbow pain each year. Repeated actions associated with racquet sports, manual work with twisting hand movements, weight training, or other traumatic movement of the elbow or wrist are common causes of this type of injury. People who participate in sports such as tennis, racquetball, badminton, as well as painters, plumbers, cooks, butchers and carpenters are particularly prone to developing tennis elbow.

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition caused by overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons — repeating the same motions again and again. This leads to pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow.

Dr. Marc Pietropaoli, a leading sports medicine specialist and orthopedic surgeon, specializing in minimally invasive surgical procedures recently used an innovative platelet separation technique to help a patient ease their tennis elbow pain and accelerate the healing process.

This technique involves extracting a patient’s blood and separating out a high concentration of platelets through a spinning process. A combination of the platelets and sodium bicarbonate are then injected into the injured tissue area. When the platelets become activated, growth factors are released and initiate the body’s natural healing response.

The entire process was performed at the clinical offices of Victory Sports Medicine & Orthopedics and took less than an hour. Prior to the injection, the patient’s elbow was numbed to limit any pain from the procedure. Typically, there is a period of 15 minutes after the injection where the patient has to sit and not move his/her arm. Thereafter limited activity is recommended for a period of up to 4 weeks and in some situations physical therapy maybe required.
